As well as a highly regarded stockman, Alec Baker is recognised as a respected Elder, cultural authority and a leader in his community. Alec was integral to the establishment of Indulkana Community, helping with the set-up of crucial infrastructure and the construction of many of the community’s buildings – including what is now the Iwantja Arts art centre.

In the early 1980s Alec Baker and Sadie Singer travelled from Indulkana to both Adelaide and Canberra in their campaign for government support to set up an art centre in their community, and Alec’s leadership and guidance has been pivotal to the continued success of Iwantja Arts. As a founding artist and long-standing director of Iwantja Arts, Alec Baker continues to maintain a prolific art practice alongside his role as community Elder and leader today.

Alec Baker was the winner of the Muswellbrook Art Prize in 2018, and winner of the Bayside Acquisitive Art Prize in 2021. Baker’s paintings and work on paper have been acquired by cultural institutions and significant collections in Australia and overseas
