Obed Namirrkki is an artist working at Maningrida Arts & Culture on Kunibídji Country in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. The artist’s father, world-renowned artist Ivan Namarriki, taught him how to paint the complex designs of crosshatching (rarrk) appearing on the bodies of the creatures he depicts, using the brilliant colours that belong to the clan. The ochres are found in secret deposits in the ground, the white color comes from a clay site in the bush, and black is charcoal from campfires.

For his work on stringybark, Wak Wak – which depicts a sacred site at Kurrurldul, south of Maningrida – Obed is the recipient of the Award of Excellence in the Morgans Financial Prize for Emerging Painting, which includes a $2000 non-acquisitive cash prize.
