Michael Reid Southern Highlands proudly presents Rew Hanks’ The Captain’s Flush, an exhibition of twelve linocut editions from one of Australia’s most celebrated printmakers.
Since the 1990s, Hanks has been researching and grappling with established versions of Australian history – both ‘official’ and in popular lore. He does this with a cartoonist’s flair for pun and parody, and with masterful technical application.
This is the first time Michael Reid will exhibit hand-coloured works by the artist, notably including Josephine’s Ark (2019) which won both the Megalo International Print Prize and Lerida Estate Acquisitive Prize.
The Captain’s Flush is presented in tandem with The Captain’s Pick, an exhibition of Rew Hanks’ black and white linocuts on show at the New England Regional Art Museum in Armidale, New South Wales.
Hanks’ work is held in the collections of the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the Art Gallery of South Australia, Artbank and several significant regional and tertiary collections
