Stacey Mrmacovski

We are delighted to present a new collection of paintings by Melbourne/Naarm-based painter Stacey Mrmacovski, now on display in the upstairs gallery.

From a distance, Mrmacovski’s abstract landscapes appear dynamic yet composed, their forms suggesting horizons, weather systems, or the organic rhythms of nature. But it is only when one steps closer that the true complexity of her process is revealed. Her use of impasto – the technique of applying thick, textured layers of paint – transforms the canvas into a terrain of intricate peaks and valleys. The surface becomes almost sculptural, the paint whipped and sliced into place with a confidence that belies its apparent chaos.

This tactile immediacy makes the paintings feel alive, as though their forms are still shifting underfoot. It is a kind of visual conversation: the viewer’s eye is drawn to one detail and then another, tracing the rhythm of the artist’s hand as it moved across the canvas. Each work offers a different tempo, a new way to engage with the materiality of paint itself.
