Sam Wilkinson

Sam Wilkinson is an emerging artist based in Hobart/Nipaluna, Tasmanial Lutruwita. With rich surfaces and a low-key palette, Wilkinson’s paintings capture the density of the remote Tasmanian wilderness, its raw beauty and often unstable conditions. Exploring these regions firsthand, Wilkinson experiences the majestic yet unforgiving elements of the landscape and is drawn to the powerful impact it can hold both physically and emotionally. Wilkinson graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art at the University of Tasmania in 2009. His works have been included in a number of local and interstate group exhibitions and has been a finalist multiple times in the RACT Tasmanian Portraiture Prize and The Henry Jones Art Prize.

“This series of works are inspired by a recent expedition through the remote regions of southwest lutruwital Tasmania. Cloaked in mist and shifting skies, the landscape revealed itself in fleeting glimpses – at times breathtakingly beautiful whilst also incredibly harsh and unforgiving. I was drawn to the raw beauty of this precious and ancient landscape where the mist played a central role, not just as a visual element, but something that transformed my experience. It obscured, revealed and deepened the mystery of my surroundings.”
