Phoebe Stone

Phoebe Stone is a Sydney-based artist working on Cammeraygal land, whose practice is rooted in the expressive possibilities of oil pastels. Known for her vibrant depictions of domestic life, she has exhibited in numerous group shows and is represented in private collections both in Australia and internationally. In 2022, she was awarded the Lane Cove Art Prize in the Drawing & Mixed Media category.

Stone’s work is defined by her exploration of composition, colour, pattern, and texture. Her subjects often centre on the intimate and the everyday—scenes of food, household objects, and the quiet details of daily life. These elements are rendered with a sense of urgency and intuition, her oil stick moving swiftly across the surface. For Stone, the act of creating is as significant as the finished piece, a meditative process of translating feeling and memory into form.

In her latest series, So Long, Summer, Stone bids farewell to the golden season with six evocative works that depict a languorous lunch table bathed in warm, golden light. Plates of shareable dishes, bouquets of flowers in vintage vases, and draped linen tablecloths are brought to life with her signature linear dashes and curlicue strokes. The energy and joy of communal gatherings are vividly conveyed through the immediacy of her chosen medium. Yet, beneath the seemingly spontaneous execution lies a calculated mastery, as Stone seamlessly balances her compositions with thoughtful deliberation.

For Stone, the interplay of these elements—composition, colour, and texture—is where “beauty and delight” reside, achieved through a process of calibrated focus and unrelenting passion.
