The foundation of Naomi White’s practice lies in close observation. Whether it’s wandering through nature and absorbing subtle changes in light and season, being drawn to the shifting textures of foliage, the play of shadow, and the fleeting tones of a landscape, or noticing the smaller, intimate details of life, the personal objects of place and living.
White’s work invites viewers to reconsider their perceptions of the world around them. Through colour and form, she captures the rhythms and moods of lived experience, revealing both its fragility and its strength. White’s paintings celebrate the intricate beauty that surrounds us, encouraging a renewed sense of connection and respect.
White’s compositions are not always literal. She often emerges multiple scenes, memories, and impressions gathered over time. White will introduce a background from one location, into the foreground of another, or subtly rearrange natural forms to create harmony and structure. This process allows her to move beyond simple representation, toward a more poetic interpretation of the landscape and place. One that honours its essence while expressing her own emotional and sensory response to it.
Ultimately, White hopes her work invites viewers to pause and look more closely, to find wonder in the familiar and to feel a sense of connection with the world we inhabit. Through the act of painting, she aims to both document and celebrate our shared environment, a reminder of its beauty, complexity, and enduring presence.
White has been painting and exhibiting throughout Australia for more than twenty years and has presented numerous solo exhibitions nationally. Her work has been selected for a range of major prizes, including the Gosford Art Prize, Portia Geach Memorial Award, John Leslie Art Prize, Doug Moran National Portrait Prize, Tattersall’s Landscape Art Prize and the Wynne Prize. She was awarded the Calleen Art Award and her work is held in the collection of Cowra Regional Art Gallery as well as private collections in Australia and internationally.
