Working from her studio in Mittagong, Lily Cummins has recently been under the mentorship of fellow Southern Highlands painter Ben Quilty, who has clearly encouraged her talents as a colourist within the still life genre.
“This new body of work is an expansion into Still Life, the brightly coloured paintings explore the tension that exists between the moment of picking and the death of the flower, it is an exercise in looking, in breathing and looking again. Within each painting there is an ominous shadow present, this speaks to the darkness, for there can be no light without the dark. The stillness of the flowers speaks to absence and presence, to love and to grief and the soft twilight of memory.”
