In their first year of commercial production, Pecora Dairy made about two tonnes of cheese. Today they run around 200 sheep and produce about 10 tonnes of cheese, selling directly to consumers through their Robertson venue Pecora Wine & Cheese and a small number of specialty cheese shops.

Evan Shipard’s practice sits in dialogue with the lineage of Australian Impressionism, particularly Arthur Streeton and his circle. Like Streeton, Tom Roberts and Louis Abrahams, he returns to the same sites over time, building an understanding of landscape through repeated observation. Coming from a background in film — where defining the establishing shot was often his role — the instinct remains cinematic, though the resolution is painterly.

“I look at landscape as I travel around, and I see the same things — whether it be Ireland, Tasmania or the Tablelands. I look for a scene to do something for me.”

“I was struck by the abundance of nature here, and the colours and the shapes. It was so different to what I had grown up with or seen before. And I really liked that it wasn’t delicate. An English garden is full of pretty, delicate flowers and while Australian natives are beautiful in their own way, they have that robustness."
